What Is the Difference between Counseling and Coaching?

Updated: Jan 29, 2019

As a trained counselor, I was taught to listen; to words, to innuendo, to what is emphasized, to what is withheld. I can feel when a client begins to squirm and back away, afraid to touch into their own depth and to excavate the hidden territory within.

A trained counselor communicates clearly that the client is being heard and cared for so a safe haven is established. Ultimately, the counselor can become a mirror to reflect the concealed areas that have been deeply buried.

As recognition and appreciation for the counseling process grows and the client becomes more trusting, their own light will enter into play — widening the access point to the inner realm.

Once entree is made, fear falls away and together the client and counselor can shine light on the human condition that allows us to laugh when we see that we are all fabulously flawed. In this new terrain, we understand how sabotage and doubt and avoidance and projection and resistance thwart us from diving into our well protected pain and trauma.

Once we touch this sacred territory, as counselor I help you unlock your soul’s voice and offer insights and tools plus specific homework assignments to help harness your strength. I prepare and then hold the space for you to feel and celebrate your authentic self.

The inner flame to move forward and create a life that matters will have been fanned and the inspiration and encouragement will inspire you to announce your co-creative relationship with life itself.

Rumi said, “What hurts you, blesses you. Darkness is your candle.” He further describes this process by saying, “You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness. You were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling, so don’t. You have wings. Learn to use them and fly.”

And this is the work of a good coach! To help you fly when you’ve tapped into your goodness and worth and unique power and potential. A good coach will take what has risen up from within you and will direct you to face the future with uprightness so you can actualize your ideals and dreams with the sense that destiny has spoken.

When I am invited to coach a client, together we establish the strategy, protocol, timeline, support systems and the cache of resources available to initiate the process of fulfilling the desires of heart and soul. These are the stepping stones toward establishing goals with definable action steps that lead to success!

“Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames.” Rumi
