In The Four Agreements, bestselling author don Miguel Ruiz shows us how self-limiting beliefs rob us of joy and create endless suffering.
Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, the agreements offer a code of conduct that can transform our lives. I consider it a roadmap to personal freedom.
Here are the four agreements:
Be impeccable with your word
Don’t take anything personally
Don’t make assumptions
Always do your best
This week, the focus is on the first agreement…. Be Impeccable with your Word.
Remember the playground song children would sing, in spite of feeling hurt….
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.”
You know what I say to that…. baloney!
Words can cause great harm, not only when spoken…. but in thoughts too. Ella Willa Wilcox said, "I hold it true that thoughts are things Endowed with bodies, breath, and wings, And that we send them forth to fill The world with good results – or ill.”
Our thoughts fly through the air and land on the people we most care about. If you worry about someone…think about them in an uplifting manner. Truth be told, we have the power to hold people down or lift them up.
How can we be impeccable with our word? Do you gossip?
Think unkind thoughts about people you care about?
Speak to yourself harshly?
Every thought, every word, every utterance is registered.
We live in a vibrational world. Nothing can be taken back…even saying I’m sorry doesn’t undo what’s been set in motion.
We are at a crossroad and we take with us everything we think, say and do.
Are you willing to be impeccable with your word?
Think on these things and come to class if you are nearby. Or ponder it further in the silence of the night. We are in this great tapestry of humanity together... so let’s get it right!
